At age 10, I began coxing my Father’s club crew at Loch Lomond Amateur Rowing Club. I rowed in Scotland from the age of 12 through to 23, then moved to Nottingham, England, to further my rowing career; I was accepted into the highly successful NCRA/GB team, training with and getting coached by a lot of big names of that time many of them big medal winners, being part of that squad was game-changing for my rowing. I absorbed everything; it was a tremendous experience. The athletes were very supportive of each other off the water and extremely competitive on the water. It wasn’t uncommon for a set training piece to turn into a full-on competitive race and later scalded by the coaches for not sticking to the program.
The coaches were of the highest calibre, too, some of them big medal winners. It was like a big family, highly competitive and full of great laughs, the perfect environment to further a rowing career.
Through my love and passion of rowing, I have developed a great system to give confidence and accelerate the learning curve of athletes are just beginning their journey in the sport of rowing and also to further enhance boat speeds of already established rowers and scullers. Though having a successful rowing career to be a good coach is not essential, it is beneficial. I have listed some of my career wins below that highlight my success.
Striving to be the best has allowed me to develop strong technical skills and understand the importance of developing and understanding these skills when putting them into practice. I will bring technical expertise to you and raise the standard of rowing and sculling to a new level, not just with cardiovascular fitness (most people have that) but with boat-moving strategies that will be mentally challenging and require the development of correct physical coordination for rowing excellence.
